Frequently Asked Questions

Is MA ALERT just for cell phones?

MA ALERT system can send messages to any device that can receive text messages through cellular service, such as cell phones, text pagers, BlackBerrys, and some wireless PDAs. In addition, you can also opt to have the messages sent to your e-mail address.

When will I get an MA ALERT message?

The school has created a well-defined set of situations that would prompt an MA ALERT message. MA ALERT only will be activated when there is a critical need to transmit urgent information to the MA community.

How can I get more information once I receive an MA ALERT message?

Due to the limitations of text messaging, MA ALERT messages will be very brief and contain vital and immediate information. More information about an MA ALERT message will be made available through the other forms of communication available to the school, including messages posted to www.macademy.org, broadcast E-NEWS, and announcements to local media.

Will I get advertising messages from MA ALERT?

No. MA ALERT will not be used to deliver any kind of advertising content, and mobile numbers will not be shared with any third parties.

Can my grand-parents or friends subscribe to MA ALERT?

Yes, however the school asks you to use your judgment when signing people up for the system.  If the party does not have an immediate need to receive this important information, we ask you not to subscribe them to this service.  Ask them to sign-up for E-NEWS.

Does signing up for MA ALERT cost me anything?

There is no cost to sign up for MA ALERT. The only charges you incur would be the normal fees charged by your mobile service provider for receiving text messages.

Why is MA ALERT necessary?

Madison Academy has a wide variety of methods to communicate with members of the MA family.  In recent years, the number of mobile telephones has dramatically increased, and text messaging has become a key method to reach people immediately. The MA ALERT service allows the university to use the most up-to-date communication method to reach parents, guardians, faculty and staff in the event of an emergency in addition to the school's other established communication methods.

What if I don’t have a cell phone or my cell phone doesn’t have text messaging?

MA ALERT is just one of the communication channels used in the event of an emergency. It is not replacing any of our other previous methods of communication. It is building on those existing methods to keep up with the latest technology used by many members of our community.
